Below is a brief summary of the development of the Kingston Academy of Medicine:
- Sep. 10, 1880 – Cataraqui Medical Society established with the following as officers: Drs. J.R. Dickson (President), M. Lovall (Vice President), W.H. Henderson (Secretary) and Drs. Michael Sullivan, Thomas R. Dupuis, Strange, and Irwin (Executive Committee Members).
- Nov. 5, 1880 – Cataraqui Medical Society approves the formation of a provincial medical association in Ontario.
- May 6, 1881 – Last recorded meeting; 9 members present.
- Sep. 7, 1888 – Meeting to revive the Cataraqui Medical Society with the following officers: Drs. W.H. Henderson (President), A.S. Cliver (Vice President), D. Edward Mundell (Secretary), and Drs. Saunders, Garrett, McGillivary, and Millman (Executive Committee Members).
- Sep. 7, 1888 – Executive Committee moves motion that the Cataraqui Medical Society be affiliated with the Ontario Medical Association.
- May 29, 1889 – Last recorded meeting; Dr. R.K. Kilborn was the last president.
- Jan. 20, 1911 – Meeting of medical practitioners and permanently employed professors of Queen’s Medical College in the Faculty Room of the Queen’s Medical Building; Dr. Edward Ryan was asked to take the chair for the purpose of organizing a Medical Society.
- 1911 – The Kingston Medical and Surgical Association was founded with the following officers: Drs. Garrett (President), W.T. Connell (Secretary) and Mylks (Senior Treasurer); the Constitution was framed by Dr. W.T. Connell and Dr. F. Etherington.
- Feb. 3, 1911 – Sixteen members attend the first regular meeting; the Annual Fee was $1.00.
- 1911 – Kingston and Frontenac Medical Society became loosely affiliated with the Ontario Medical Association.
- Between January 31, 1916 and March 12, 1917 – The name of the Society was changed to The Kingston and Frontenac Medical Society and By-laws were drawn at that time taking note of this change in name and in the area from which the physicians who were members should be drawn.
- May 26, 1920 – Kingston and Frontenac Medical Society became formally affiliated with the Ontario Medical Association.
- Dec. 20,1950 – Kingston and Frontenac Medical Society requests change of name to The Kingston Academy of Medicine.
- May 31, 1951 – Ontario Medical Association approved of this change of name.
Additional Information about the Kingston Academy of Medicine Physicians:
- Dr. Michael Sullivan was a surgeon and a professor of surgery at Queen’s University. Most of his operations were performed at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston. His residence was on the northwest corner of King and Princess Streets. He died in 1904.
- Dr. Thomas H. Dupuis was a surgeon who performed most of his surgery in the Kingston General hospital.
- Dr. W.H. Henderson was a general practitioner.
- Dr. D. Edward Mundell was a general practitioner who later turned to surgery.
- Dr. Saunders was a general practitioner. He died of broncho-¬pneumonia in 1896.
- Dr. K.E. Fenwick was professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics during the days when Dr. W.T. Connell attended Queen’s University. He died in the fall 1915 from septicemia developing from an infected finger.
- Dr. Edward Ryan was a general practitioner who also taught Anatomy.
